Okay, okay, I’ve been super lax with my solo website (and music) for these past few years. Things have just been tearing up with The Modeens since we moved to Tucson and it’s been difficult to juggle. But some new songs have started coming out – much more mellow than what I usually like to play for The Modeens – and it’s bringing me back to my dad’s folk records and the seventies singer/songwriters i used to hear on the radio as a small child.
I’m starting to write from a different side of me and going down memory lane a bit. I’m getting reacquainted with some good material that I never really put out into the world like I wanted to. And you’ll be hearing about one in particular that I did in Humboldt with my man, Jamie Laboz, and like-a-brother-but-we’re-not-related, Philip B Williams, very soon.
Since that record, I’ve been focusing on The Modeens almost exclusively and having a blast! And then after years living in New York and LA, Jamie and I were looking for a smaller place, a special place with a lot of different creative things going on, but with a sense of community (we were spoiled by the Krewe of Grandview in Venice Beach!) And about two and a half years ago we found it in Tucson (thanks, Michael P!) So we made the jump and have been evolving our band into what I feel is a kickass sound and rocking out with Jamie is one of the joys of my life.
But lately i’ve been feeling an insistent finger poking at my shoulder. Somewhere inside, a quiet voice has been dictating new chords, new subjects – moving away from the lovers angst that dominated my earliest work. Some sweetness, some sadness, and lots of lyrics that will probably only make sense to me.
So now I’ve put this new website together and am working on a new album sometime in 2011 closer to the americana, country side of the musical spectrum (though there’s other stuff going on in there). I honestly don’t know how yall will like it – it’s more just something I feel I have to do.
